Uneven Income Growth: Volatility in the Bottom 50%, Stability in the Middle, and Shifts at the Top

The income growth rates reveal significant volatility, especially for the bottom 50%. This group experienced sharp fluctuations, including a -10.2% contraction in 1965-68 and a notable 29.0% surge from 2021-23, largely driven by post-COVID recovery and government stimulus programs like MGNREGA.

In contrast, the top 10% enjoyed sustained growth until the post-COVID period, when their income contracted by 4.4% due to market volatility, particularly in sectors like real estate and luxury goods. The middle 40%, on the other hand, experienced steady, moderate growth, reflecting stability without the high volatility seen in the bottom 50% or the dramatic growth of the top 10%
