In per capita income terms, the Western zonal council comes out on top, followed by the Southern and the Northern. The West accounts for the highest share of people in rich income categories followed by the North. The East leads in the case of families that have an annual income of less than Rs 125,000 a year (the Destitute), and the South in the case of the Middle Class, or those earning between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 30 lakh a year. There is a distinct regional pattern to the distribution of households by income.
